A few notes about Salem:
-
Located approximately 16 miles north of Boston, the City of Salem is a seaport community of about 41,421 residents.
-
It was founded by Roger Conant in 1626, incorporated in 1629, became a city in 1836 and today it is a lively urban setting, rich in culture and diversity with a bustling downtown and attractive waterfront.
-
The Port of Salem has a rich history of shipping and trade. At its peak it was world renowned and the center of trade in America.
-
Much of the city was destroyed in the Great Salem Fire of 1914.
-
Stemming from the witchcraft trials of 1692, Salem is known as "The Witch City" and over the years, with its month long celebration of Halloween, has become known as the Halloween Capital of the world.
-
While abundant with history, Salem is a modern, vibrant city today. The "daytime population" increases significantly with private and governmental businesses such as the Dominion Power Plant, North Shore Medical Center, North Shore Children's Hospital, Salem District Court, Essex County Superior Court, Family & Probate Court, Registry of Deeds and the Shetland Park Office Complex. Also a factor is the faculty, staff and student population of Salem State College, numerous small businesses and of course, tourism.
-
With its close proximity to Logan International Airport and the City of Boston, Salem has become a "bedroom community" for some. Commuting to Boston by car is made easy with access to Routes 1, 1A, 107, 114, 128 and 129; by train via the MBTA's Salem Depot commuter rail station; by boat via the Salem Ferry and several bus routes. Salem is also close to Interstates 93 and 95 as well as the MBTA's Blue Line subway service.
